  • A powerful storm caused severe flooding across Greater São Paulo on February 10, particularly in Guarulhos, submerging vehicles and disrupting traffic.
  • The storm led to massive power outages, affecting 76 700 homes in São Paulo by 18:30 local time (LT).
  • The Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) issued a state of alert for flooding, which lasted until 17:45 LT.

A powerful storm swept through Greater Sao Paulo at around 16:00 local time (LT) on Monday, February 10, leading to severe floods that drowned vehicles and caused widespread damage. The Guarulhos municipality was the worst hit by the storm.

A Severe Storm Warning was issued for northern, central, and eastern areas of Sao Paulo. In Guarulhos, people received the notification for the warning, at 16:45 LT. However, by that time city was already flooded, with important avenues, such as Via Dutra, Avenida Paulo Faccini, and Avenida Tiradentes.

The yard of a luxury car dealership in ViaDutra was flooded causing approximately 20 cars to get submerged in the flood waters.

The Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) of the City of São Paulo declared a state of alert for flooding in the affected regions.

The alert was extended to the entire city until 17:45 LT, after which the rainfall began to subside. Other municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, including Osasco, Jandira, Carapicuíba, and Mairiporã, also experienced heavy rainfall, flooding, and hail.

The rains were triggered by the combination of intense heat and the entry of sea breezes into the region.

Images from the weather radar indicated significant rainfall in the eastern zone, especially in the areas of Penha and Mooca, as well as in the western zone, in the subprefecture of Butantã. These rains acted in an isolated manner, presenting additional risks such as gusts of wind and possible flooding.

Around 17 900 homes in the São Paulo capital were without electricity at 15:55 LT. As the rain intensified and spread throughout the city, the number rose to 43 100 by 16:31 LT. By 17:00 LT, outages had already affected 65 400 homes, and by 18:30 LT, the total reached an alarming 76 700.

Around 21 400 homes were left without power in Osasco, some 5 700 in Carapicuíba and 3 400 in Itapecerica.

At least four points in the capital of São Paulo were identified as areas with impassable flooding at
18:00 LT.
