A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.3 hit Andreanof Islands, Alaska at 19:57 UTC on December 8, 2024. The agency is reporting a depth of 18 km (11 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 107 km (66 miles) SSW of Adak, Alaska, U.S., and 1 540 km (957 miles) ESE Klyuchi, Kamchatka, Russia.
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, NWS PTWC said.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.
The quake was followed by M4.3 at 20:01, M3.9 at 20:09, and M3.7 at 20:13 UTC.
This is the second M6+ earthquake of the day after M6.1 in the Kuril Islands, Russia at 10:25 UTC.
