Bright green fireball over Long Island, New York
A bright fireball was seen and recorded streaking through the night sky over the northern tip of Long Island, New York at 02:08 UTC on April 27, 2024 (22:08 LT, April 26).
The American Meteor Society (AMS) received 130 reports from people living in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.
“An analysis of their accounts puts the first sighting of the fireball at an altitude of 80 km (50 miles) above the Atlantic Ocean, 24 km (15 miles) from Montauk on Long Island,” NASA Meteor Watch said.
Proceeding slightly north of west at 62 000 km/h (38 500 mph), the meteor passed over Bridgehampton and Jamesport before breaking apart 48 km (30 miles) above Long Island Sound.
This meteor was not a member of the currently active eta Aquariid meteor shower.
