Asteroid 2023 BU to fly past Earth at 0.03 LD on January 27 – fourth closest on record

asteroid 2023 bu

A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2023 BU will fly past Earth at a distance of 0.026 LD / 0.00007 AU (9 877 km / 6 137 miles) from the center of our planet at 00:27 UTC on January 27, 2023.

This is the third <1LD asteroid to fly past Earth since the start of the year and the fourth closest on record.

2023 BU was first observed by amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisovat at Margo observatory in Nauchnij, Russia on January 21 — 5 days before its close approach.

The object belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 3.7 and 8.2 m (12.1 – 26.9 feet).

The flyby will take place over the southern tip of South America.

The green line indicates the object’s apparent motion relative to the Earth, and the bright green marks are the object’s location at approximately half-hour intervals. The Moon’s orbit is grey. The blue arrow points in the direction of Earth’s motion and the yellow arrow points toward the Sun. Credit: Minor Planet Center

The asteroid will experience a significant change in its orbit around the Sun due to Earth’s gravity as it comes close to our planet.

Before the encounter, the asteroid’s orbit was roughly circular, similar to Earth’s, taking 359 days to complete one orbit.

After its encounter, the asteroid’s orbit will be more elongated, moving it out to about halfway between Earth’s and Mars’ orbits at its farthest point from the Sun. The asteroid will then complete one orbit every 425 days.

  1. So giving the asteroid it’s best shot in size (26.9 feet), I converted the center to center distance to feet and discovered that the ‘bullet’ will miss us by 1,204,586.0 diameters.

The Earth’s mean (average) radius is 3,959 miles. By kindly missing us by 6,137 miles from the center, it will miss our surface (on average) by 2,178 miles. We can only hope that it hits all the Disney Satellites, but I think most of those are in LEO.
