Landslide kills at least 23 in Ethiopia
At least 23 people have died after a mudslide hit the Konta district of southern Ethiopia on October 12, 2019. Officials confirmed the numbers on October 14.
The landslide, which was a result of heavy rains, took the lives of victims from Amia 03 locality also known as the Duka Zlie area, according to Cultural and Tourism Communication Bureau head, Takele Tesfa.

The victims were identified as members of five different households– all of them were asleep as the landslide occurred. Tesfa added that 13 of those who perished were women.
Authorities have been conducting rescue operations since Monday, October 14, to look for survivors and recover dead bodies, particularly in the five houses where the victims are feared buried.
18 bodies have been retrieved so far, Tesfa said. The mudslide also killed several domestic animals.
Reports said the region has been experiencing heavy rains over the past few days.
