Brutal hailstorm hits Sardinia during heatwave, sharp temperature drop, Italy
A brutal hailstorm hit the island of Sardinia on August 2, 2018, covering streets and land with up to 30 cm (1 feet) of ice.
The event was accompanied by a sharp temperature drop, from 35 °C (95 °F) to just 12 °C (53.6 °F) within minutes.
The rare storm caused traffic chaos and caught drivers by surprise, prompting dozens of requests to emergency services.
Temperatures on August 3 rose up to 28 °C (82.4 °F) but the unstable weather conditions continued and parts of the island saw strong thunderstorms and floods on August 4.
Meanwhile, in the neighboring Alps, unusually strong flash floods struck the Austrian region of Tyrol, causing mudflow and streams to overflow.
