Severe thunderstorms swept across parts of northern and southeastern Texas from Friday night into Saturday morning, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and suspected tornadoes.

Around 260 000 customers were without power across Texas early Saturday morning, with over 150 000 being reported in Houston alone.

CenterPoint Energy, the largest power distributor in Houston, said it had pre-positioned approximately 1 300 frontline workers and contractors at 12 service centers and activated emergency response operations to assess and repair overhead lines and damaged equipment.

Wind speeds of over 95 km/h (59 mph) were recorded in the Houston metro area, with a gust of 103 km/h (64 mph) being recorded in Hempstead.

Widespread flooding was also reported with the NWS radar showing widespread rainfall totals of 51–102 mm (2–4 inches) with isolated totals of up to 152 mm (6 inches).

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport recorded 78.7 mm (3.1 inches) of rainfall through Friday, setting a daily rainfall record and notching its third-wettest October day in 25 years, reported Fox Weather.

The storms had caused widespread damage across the Dallas-Fort Worth area through Friday night, with reports of an unwarned tornado circulating on social media.

NWS spokesperson Jennifer Dunn said there were straight-line winds, but they haven’t been able to verify reports on social media that a tornado touched down in south Fort Worth.

Local fire departments reported six houses caught fire in the predawn hours on Friday in Dallas and Denton counties as the storms rolled through the region. Whether the fires were caused by the severe weather event is yet to be confirmed.
