A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.5 hit near the Nicobar Islands, India at 18:41 UTC on July 28, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 67 km (32 miles) SSW of Teesta Point, Nicobar Islands, 259 km (161 miles) WNW of Sabang (population 42 066), and 276 km (172 miles) WNW of Banda Aceh (population 255 029), Aceh, Indonesia.
24 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking.
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick with a concrete floor and precast concrete frame with wall construction.
