A landslide triggered by torrential rain hit a three-story building in a village in China’s Guangdong Province on Sunday, May 18. Officials have reported that three people lost their lives and one person is still missing.
The landslide hit behind a building in Pingtougang village, the city of Gaozhou, around 07:00 local time on Sunday, trapping seven people. Six people were pulled from the debris, while three of them later died despite treatment. The other three remain hospitalized but are stable.
More than 140 police, firefighters, and doctors are continuing the search for the missing individual.
Heavy rains have swept through several Guangdong cities like Qingyuan, Shaoguan, Heyuan, Yangjiang, Maoming, Zhaoqing, and Foshan in recent days. Officials have warned residents to stay alert for risks like flash floods, landslides, and mudslides. A Yellow alert has been raised in areas of Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi.
The province is known to have high landslide susceptibility due to its geography, rainfall patterns and frequent typhoons.
