Tornado damages homes and school in Princeton, Indiana

An EF-1 tornado struck Princeton, Indiana, on April 10, 2025, causing widespread damage and leaving over 500 customers without power.

The tornado touched down at about 15:50 CDT near the city school and traveled southeast for around 1.77 km (1.1 miles), causing extensive damage to residential areas and public infrastructure. The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office said the event surprised them and warned residents to ‘always have a backup form of getting information.’

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado warning at 15:56 CDT, covering Princeton, Francisco, and Somerville, with radar data and damage assessments suggesting an EF-1 strength and winds up to 170 km/h (105 mph).

Residential areas, including Seminary, Pine, Oak, and Ford streets, were significantly affected. Roofs were torn from several buildings, walls of outbuildings collapsed, and considerable tree damage was reported. Princeton Community High School also sustained damage, prompting class cancellations across North Gibson Community School Corporation on Friday, April 11.

The tornado caused power outages to more than 500 customers, according to Duke Energy, with reports of downed power lines and at least one broken electrical pole.

In addition, an eight-block area north of Brumfield and east of Main was heavily impacted and declared hazardous due to debris and electrical hazards.

Despite the scale of structural damage, no injuries were reported, and all residents were accounted for.

This was Indiana’s 44th tornado of 2025, following a series of severe weather events in the region. Earlier in the year, on April 2, multiple EF-1 and EF-2 tornadoes were confirmed across central Indiana, and on March 15, another tornado caused destruction in the same county.
