Extreme Cold Warning issued for Northern Wisconsin
An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for Northern Wisconsin on January 19, 2025, with wind chills expected to plummet to -40 °C (-40 °F) on January 20. The Extreme Cold Warning will extend across all of Wisconsin from the night of January 20 into the morning of January 21.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Green Bay has reported that steady northwest winds combined with low temperatures ranging from -20 to -29 °C (-5 to -20 °F) on January 20 will create hazardous wind chill conditions in Northern Wisconsin.
According to forecasts, temperatures will drop drastically with extreme wind chills expected in several locations.
Antigo will experience temperatures of -37 °C (-35 °F) on the night of January 20, dropping further to -42 °C (-40 °F) on January 21. Crandon will see temperatures of -37 °C (-35 °F) on January 20, decreasing to -40 °C (-40 °F) by January 21.
Florence is expected to reach -35 °C (-31 °F) overnight while Green Bay will have temperatures of -27 °C (-17 °F) on January 20, with wind chills reaching -31 °C (-24 °F) by January 21.
Lakewood is expected to drop from -33 °C (-27 °F) on January 20 to -36 °C (-33 °F) by the morning of January 21. Land O’ Lakes will see -35 °C (-31 °F) on January 20, plunging to -40 °C (-40 °F) that night.
Marshfield and Wausau are both forecast to experience -32 °C (-26 °F) on January 20. By the morning of January 21, Marshfield will drop to -39 °C (-38 °F), while Wausau will see wind chills down to -37 °C (-35 °F).
The Extreme Cold Warning will extend across all of Wisconsin from the night of January 20 into the morning of January 21.

Forecasted wind chills in multiple areas are expected to remain dangerously low.
Rhinelander is forecast to drop to -39 °C (-38 °F) on the night of January 20 and Waupaca to -34 °C (-29 °F).
Stevens Point is expected to reach -36 °C (-33 °F) during the early morning hours on January 21, Shawano -32 °C (-26 °F), and Manitowoc -31 °C (-24 °F).

Residents in affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions against the extreme cold. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 10 minutes at these temperatures. The NWS advises wearing multiple layers, covering all exposed skin, and avoiding prolonged outdoor activities.
Emergency services recommend checking on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those without adequate heating. Pets should be brought indoors and heating systems should be monitored for safety.
Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing until January 22 before seeing slight improvement. Wind chills will still pose a threat during nighttime hours.
