Mudflows impact 497 buildings in Issyk-Kul district, Kyrgyzstan

Special services are working to clear the aftermath of mudflows that struck Kyrgystan’s Issyk-Kul district on August 18, 2024, affecting 497 buildings and disrupting several areas. As of August 19, 60 structures had been cleared by rescue teams.

Mudflows that occurred on August 18 in the Issyk-Kul district of Kyrgyzstan resulted in significant damage to residential and public facilities.

According to local officials, the mudflows flooded 497 residential buildings, affecting multiple villages and resort areas. The affected villages included Korumdu and Bulan-Sogottu, while resorts such as “Aurora,” “Aurora +,” “Neptune,” and “Semiram” also experienced flooding.

The settlements of Jeti-Oguz and Ton districts were similarly impacted, with the mudflows blocking traffic on the Kesken-Bel pass in Ton district and destroying a house in the village of Kyzyl-Suu.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that 755 people and 59 units of special engineering equipment have been deployed to clear the affected areas.

As of August 19, rescuers had cleared 60 residential buildings, including 25 by rescue teams and 35 by the civil defense service.

The mudflows struck late in the evening on August 18, causing widespread flooding and destruction. In addition to the 497 residential buildings, the mudflows also flooded a kindergarten, a first aid station, a library, and several resort areas. In Kyzyl-Suu village, a house was destroyed, and a shed was flooded.
