An extreme rainstorm struck China’s Shaanxi Province on the morning of August 9, 2024, bringing in heavy rain totaling 172 mm (6.77 inches) of rainfall and causing severe flooding that swept away multiple vehicles.

An extreme rainstorm struck Zhidan County in China’s Shaanxi Province on the morning of August 9, bringing in five hours of continuous rain and causing severe deluge in the region.

A total of 172 mm (6.77 inches) of rain fell over the region during the five hours, turning roads into raging rivers and causing destructive mudslides.

Visuals shared on social networks showed cars being swept away and piled up amidst the aftermath of flooding and mudslides, with some cars sunken under collapsed roads.

Floods had caused a bridge collapse in the same region on July 20 and led to 11 deaths and over 30 missing persons.
