Strong and shallow M6.7 earthquake hits Macquarie Island region
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.7 hit the Macquarie Island region, about halfway between New Zealand and Australia, at 16:16 UTC on March 3, 2024. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.
The epicenter was located 1 543 km (959 miles) SSW of Bludd, New Zealand.
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, NWS PTWC said.
This is the first M6+ earthquake since M6.3 in the southern East Pacific Rise at 01:51 UTC on February 23 and M6.0 near Colonia, Micronesia at 11:40 UTC on February 14.
