Asteroid 2019 SS3 flew past Earth at 0.73 LD

A newly discovered asteroid designated 2019 SS3 flew past Earth at 0.73 LD / 0.00188 AU (281 243 km / 174 756 miles) on September 22, 2019. This is the 47th known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year.

The object was first observed at ATLAS-HKO, Haleakala, Hawaii on September 25, 3 days after it made its close approach to our planet.

It belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 15 and 34 m (49 – 111 feet).

2019 SS3 flew past us at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 14.42 km/s at 22:48 UTC.
