Shallow M6.0 earthquake near San Andres archipelago, Caribbean Sea

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit near Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina (Colombia), the Caribbean Sea at 03:40 UTC on November 25, 2018 (21:40 LT, November 24). The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 10 km.

The quake was preceded by M4.6 at 01:19 UTC and followed by M4.4 and M4.2 at 05:16 and 05:28 UTC, respectively.

The epicenter was located 32 km (20 miles) SE of Providencia (population 2 404) and 86 km (54 miles) NE of San Andres (population 58 257).

Based on all available data, there is no significant tsunami threat from this earthquake. However, there is a very small possibility of tsunami waves along coasts located nearest the epicenter, PTWC said.

There are about 74 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

Some 5 000 people are estimated to have felt moderate shaking, 63 000 light and 1 940 000 weak.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
