Strong and shallow M6.4 earthquake hits Mindanao, Philippines

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the PHIVOLCS as M6.4 hit Mindanao, Philippines at 07:16 UTC (03:16 local time). The agency is reporting a depth of 14 km (8.7 miles). USGS and EMSC registered it as M6.1 at a depth of 10 km. 

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 9.1 km (5.6 miles) WNW of Manay (population 20 336 ), 38.5 km (23.9 miles) SSW of Baganga (population 10 106),41.6 km (25.8 miles) NE of Mati (population 105 908), 58.5 km (36.3 miles) ESE of San Mariano (population 18 668) and 95.6 km (59.4 miles) E of Davao (population 1 212 504), Philippines.

PHIVOLCS said the quake is tectonic in origin, adding that it expects both damage and aftershocks.

There are 3 660 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

Some 29 000 people are estimated to have felt strong shaking, 87 000 moderate, 4 691 000 light and 43 472 000 weak.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are unknown/miscellaneous types and heavy wood frame construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
