Shallow M6.0 earthquake hits north of Franz Josef Land, Arctic Ocean

 A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit north of Franz Josef Land, Arctic ocean at 19:11 UTC on October 28, 2017. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth. This is the third earthquake in this area within the past 3 hours.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 677 km (421 miles) N of Franz Jozef Land (population 17), Russia, 1 070 km (665 miles) NE of Longyearbyen (population 2 060), Svalbard and Jan Mayen, and 1 917 km (1 191 miles) NNE of Vadsø (population 5 139), Norway.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles). 

Tsunami is not expected.

This is the third strong earthquake in this region after M5.7 earthquakes at 16:13 UTC and 16:16 UTC, both at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
