• Major multi-day rainfall event forecast across Middle East from March 25-31

    A large-scale storm system is forecast to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across parts of the Middle East, including Iraq, Iran, and the Gulf states, between March 25 and 31, 2026, raising flood risk in urban and desert regions. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have issued warnings for unstable conditions with rain, strong winds, and reduced visibility, while flooding has already caused fatalities in Oman. Parts of the region might see a year’s worth of rain or more through the course of the event.

  • Floods in northern Oman claim three lives, cause widespread evacuations

    Heavy rains affecting Oman over the past couple of days caused significant disruption and widespread floods in which at least 3 people lost their lives. Over 200 individuals have been evacuated or rescued, with schools suspending classes in affected areas. The Ministry of Health has also rescheduled 25 000 appointments in light of the flooding.

    The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “Tej” has slightly weakened but still poses a significant threat to the coasts of Yemen and Oman. Tej is expected to make landfall near Al Ghaidah, Yemen, between 18:00 and 21:00 UTC today, bringing extremely heavy rains, wind speeds of 125 – 135 km/h (77.6 – 83.9 mph), gusting to 150 km/h (93.2 mph), and significant storm surge.

    A large tornado accompanied by thunderstorms struck the Wilayat of Ja’alan Bani Bu Ali in the Oman’s Al Sharqiyah Governorate on Saturday, April 22, 2023. No damage or injuries were reported.
