Extreme flooding in Ad Dakhiliyah, Oman march 6 2024

Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall and hail wreaked havoc across Oman over the past couple of days.

On March 6, extreme flash flooding hit the town of Adam in the Al Dakhiliyah region.

Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said today a number of governorates are witnessing thunderstorms ranging from 20 to 60 mm (0.8 – 2.4 inches) associated with downdraft, fresh winds and hail.

The affected governorates include Al Dhahira, Al Dakhiliyah, North Al Sharqiyah, South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta Governorates. The chances of varying intensity rainfall will continue over the rest of northern governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, CAA said.

According to the data shown by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, the Wilayat of Khasab in Musandam Governorate received 62 mm (2.44 inches) of rainfall from March 4 to 5. It was followed by the wilayats of Shinas and Sohar in North Al Batinah Governorate, with 40 mm (1.57 inches) for each, and then the Wilayat of Madha in Musandam Governorate with 36 mm (1.42 inches).

While the Wilayat of Dibba in Musandam Governorate recorded 28 mm (1.10 inches) of rainfall, 26 mm (1.02 inches) was recorded in the Wilayat of Dhank located in Al Dhahirah Governorate, 23 mm (0.91 inches) in the Wilayat of Ibri in the same governorate, and 20 mm (0.79 inches) in the Wilayat of Liwa in North Al Batinah Governorate.

In addition to rain and flash floods, several villages in Al Batinah reported hailstorms.
