Tornado damages 28 homes in two villages of Demak Regency, Central Java, Indonesia

At least 28 homes and a vehicle were damaged after a tornado struck the Harjowinangun and Kebsonsari villages in Central Java, Indonesia, on May 2, 2026.

A tornado struck two villages in the Dempet Subdistrict in the Demak Regency of Central Java at around 16:00 local time (LT) on May 2.

While no fatalities were reported, at least 28 homes and one vehicle were damaged by the twister in the Harjowinangun Village and Kebonsari villages. The vehicle, a Honda Brio, was damaged by flying debris in Harjowinangun village.

Purwanto, a local resident, said the wind came suddenly from the north and immediately hit the settlement. Residents tried to save themselves as the roofs began to collapse, reported Berisatu.

“People panicked and ran outside in fear—the wind was that strong. Then the roofs all started falling. My house was badly damaged; all the roof tiles were completely destroyed,” said Purwanto.

The head of Harjowinangun Hamlet, Suprayitno, stated that the damage was not limited to homes but also affected educational facilities.

The Demak Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is still conducting further assessments of the tornado’s impact. Residents are urged to remain vigilant for the potential of strong winds amid ongoing severe weather.
