A 33-year-old resident of Hawaiʻi was found dead after entering a closed area on the east side of the Kīlauea caldera in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on February 26, 2026. A 33-year-old resident of Hawaiʻi was recovered and pronounced dead on February 27 after entering a closed area on the east side of the Kīlauea caldera within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Park officials said the incident occurred in a section of the caldera that is closed to the public due to hazardous terrain and unstable volcanic features.

Restricted areas around Kīlauea are established to reduce the risk of accidents in areas with steep cliffs, loose rock, volcanic vents, and sudden ground collapse hazards.

Authorities reminded visitors that the Kīlauea caldera contains dangerous terrain, including unstable cliff edges and volcanic features capable of causing serious or fatal accidents without warning.

The caldera floor and rim areas can also contain fractures, thin crust over voids, and areas weakened by past eruptive activity.

Search and rescue operations continued overnight in steep, hazardous terrain before the individual was located on February 27. The victim was airlifted from the area and transported to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the victim’s family has been notified, but the individual’s name has not yet been released.

As of March 4, the alert level at Kīlauea remains Watch, and the Aviation Color Code remains Orange. The ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption sequence is currently paused.

“Episode 42 ended February 15 at 23:38 HST. An absence of inflation over the last 24 hours has pushed back the modeled forecast window for the onset of episode 43 lava fountaining to March 10–16,” the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

No significant activity has been noted along Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone.
