Two people were killed and a third seriously injured after a large tree fell onto a moving vehicle in Calvert County, Maryland, during winter storm conditions on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

The incident occurred at approximately 16:40 LT (21:40 UTC) along Solomons Island Road (Route 2) near Aspen Woods Drive in the Sunderland area.

According to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, a large tree collapsed onto a pickup truck traveling on the roadway. Two occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third individual was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a medical facility with serious injuries.

The fatal impact occurred as an intense nor’easter rapidly deepened off the Mid-Atlantic coast. At 09:00 EST (14:00 UTC) on February 23, the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center reported the cyclone’s central pressure at 966 hPa while tracking east-northeast approximately 225 km (140 miles) south-southeast of Chatham, Massachusetts.

Blizzard Warnings remained in effect from the northern Delmarva Peninsula through coastal New England, with hurricane-force wind gusts reported in parts of southeastern Massachusetts.

In Maryland, preliminary storm total snowfall ranged from 127 mm (5 inches) in Prince Frederick to over 305 mm (12 inches) in Sabillasville, according to the Weather Prediction Center. Peak wind gusts reached 72 km/h (45 mph) at Cove Point LNG Pier and Ocean City Municipal Airport during the event.

The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong wind gusts increased the likelihood of tree failure, particularly along exposed roadways.

Heavy snow and strong winds continued across parts of the Northeast into Monday, February 23, before the system began pulling away from New England. Snowfall totals reached 30–60 cm (1–2 feet) in parts of New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, with locally higher amounts exceeding 70 cm (27 inches) on Long Island.

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin. The roadway in Calvert County was temporarily closed while emergency crews cleared debris and conducted an investigation.
