Deep M6.2 earthquake hits Fiji region

A deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 struck the Fiji region at 20:44 UTC on February 10, 2026 (08:44 LT, February 11). The agency is reporting a depth of 511 km (317 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 467 km (290 miles) southeast of Suva (population 77 300), Fiji, and 325 km (202 miles) west of Nuku‘alofa (population 22 400), Tonga.

1 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.

There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage. Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are informal (metal, timber, GI, and miscellaneous types).

No significant secondary hazards are expected from this event.
