Subfreezing temperatures and widespread frost affecting plant growth are forecast for northern Illinois on the nights of October 15 and 16.
Temperatures are likely to range between -2.2 °C and 3.3 °C (upper 20s °F to upper 30s °F). Subfreezing temperatures are most likely along and west of the Fox and Illinois River valleys.
These conditions are expected to bring an abrupt end to the growing season for plants. Residents are advised to keep sensitive plants indoors or covered to protect them from frost.
Frost and freezing conditions are expected to move away from Chicago and the Lake and shift eastward to northwestern Indiana by Wednesday night.
