A new study by scientists at Harvard and Montana Tech universities presented the Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis, which contends that Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) — commonly known as UFOs — may have hidden earthly origins and involve advanced terrestrial civilizations. This puts into question the current extraterrestrial explanation and encourages scientists to be open to unorthodox possibilities.

  • Researchers examined anecdotal reports and supposed evidence, including UAP sightings over military locations, remote terrestrial places, undersea bases, and even lunar conditions.
  • The study challenges the extraterrestrial hypothesis, urging for scientific openness to alternative explanations for UAPs, aiming to broaden understanding and exploration of potential advanced civilizations on Earth.

Tim Lomas and Brendan Case of Harvard University, in collaboration with Michael Paul Masters of Montana Tech of the University of Montana, have authored a study titled “The Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis: A Case for Scientific Openness to a Concealed Earthly Explanation for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena,” which will be published in June 2024 in the journal “Philosophy and Cosmology.”

The cryptoterrestrial hypothesis, part of a minority class of unconventional terrestrial explanations for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), suggests that these phenomena may reflect activities of intelligent beings who are concealed in stealth here on Earth, such as “walking among us” by passing as humans. This hypothesis posits that these beings might be living hidden among us, underground, or in nearby locations like the moon.

While most scientists are likely to regard this idea skeptically, it warrants genuine consideration alongside more conventional terrestrial and extraterrestrial explanations, authors argue.

This research challenges previously-held conventional views on  Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). According to a Pentagon official, the US is presently tracking over 650 probable UFOs, showing a huge increase in government interest in these events.

“We’re not saying this is right, we’re not saying that this is absolutely 100% the case, we’re saying these are some potentialities, these are some possibilities to help explain the origin of these beings,” Masters said.

This speculative thought piece challenges orthodox views on (UAP) by proposing the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis.

This idea proposes that certain UAP may come not from extraterrestrial sources, but from advanced terrestrial civilizations or beings hidden within Earth itself. The researchers propose that this option should be seriously considered alongside traditional explanations such as human-made technologies or advanced extraterrestrial civilizations. The study calls into question the widely accepted extraterrestrial explanation for UAP sightings and contacts.

According to the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis, several UAP occurrences or sightings that are attributed to extraterrestrial beings may really be the result of advanced and sophisticated terrestrial beings or technologies hidden within Earth’s ecosystems. This theory calls into question prevailing paradigms and encourages scientists to investigate a larger range of options when investigating these intriguing phenomena. Some of the researchers have also speculated that these beings might even be humans from the future who have excelled in time travel.

“However, as noted above, a striking feature of the UAP topic has been the extent to which its phenomena seem to resist explanation in conventional terms (e.g., craft without visible means of propulsion or sources of exhaust). Such observations have prompted some observers, including in the US federal government and defense establishment, to speculate that unconventional “ultraterrestrial” explanations are precisely what is called for – from interdimensional beings to future human time travelers, to the panoply of aethereal NHIs recognized in most cultures, such as the class of beings known in the contemporary West as angels, labeled “sacraterrestrials” or “aetherrestrials”,” the researchers noted.

The cryptoterrestrial theory has been discussed in a variety of geographical areas related to reported UAP sightings including remote terrestrial places, undersea bases, and even lunar conditions. These locations are prominent for beliefs surrounding them that advanced terrestrial civilizations or technologies may be responsible for some UAP events that occurred there.

The publication of this study in mid-2024 comes at an important time, given ongoing discussions and public interest related to UAP. It is related to how scientists and researchers investigate and interpret strange aerial occurrences.

The researchers urge for scientific openness to other explanations for UAP other than the extraterrestrial hypothesis. They claim that investigating cryptoterrestrial possibilities could provide new insights into the perplexing nature of UAP and broaden scientific research into potential advanced civilizations or life forms that reside in hidden habitats on Earth.

For the study, the researchers went through a plethora of anecdotal and alleged evidence related to UAP.

This includes reported UAP sightings above important military installations, claims of interactions with non-human intelligence in underground or aquatic habitats, and speculative narratives linking UAP to secret terrestrial activities.

According to the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis, intelligent entities responsible for UAPs may be hiding on Earth or nearby, underground, on the far side of the moon, or even living among us, potentially disguised as one of us.

This paper is a speculative thought piece that reflects the authors’ own interests and ideas, and is not associated with the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard, author’s disclaimer says. “We would also like to emphasize that we believe this hypothesis to be in all likelihood false, but nevertheless believe it still merits scientific investigation.”
