Strong M6.4 earthquake hits Andreanof Islands, Alaska

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.4 hit Andreanof Islands, Alaska at 11:35 UTC on October 16, 2023. The agency is reporting a depth of 187 km (116 miles).
The epicenter was located about 65.2 km (40.4 miles) NNW of Adak, Alaska, and 1406.3 km (871.9 miles) S of Anadyr, Russia.
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, NWS PTWC said.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.
