Shallow M5.6 earthquake hits western Nepal, killing 1 person and injuring 2

At least one person was killed and two others were injured when an M5.6 earthquake hit the Bajura district in western Nepal at 08:58 UTC (14:43 LT) on Tuesday, January 25, 2023. The USGS registered it at a depth of 25 km (15 miles). EMSC is reporting M5.6 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
The epicenter of the earthquake was located around the Mela area of the Bajura district in Sudurpaschim Province.
55 000 people are estimated to have felt moderate shaking and 21 794 weak.


A 35-year-old local woman was killed in Gaumul village after being hit by a falling stone while collecting fodder for her cattle.
Initial reports indicate that 42 houses have been damaged in Bajura and Bajhang districts and various other places in Karnali Province.
A landslide resulting from the earthquake killed over 40 sheep and injured one person.
Telecommunication services in the region have been interrupted.
This is the second major earthquake to hit western Nepal in the last two months, with six people killed in an M6.6 earthquake that hit the Doti district in November 2022.
