A deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit Banda Sea, Indonesia at 20:55 UTC on January 4, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 556.2 km (345 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located about 282 km (175 miles) E of Katabu, Indonesia and 422 km (262 miles) N of Dili, Timor Leste.

There are just a few people living within 100 km (62 miles).

83 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.

There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
