In a rare event, a waterspout was spotted becoming a tornado as it moved over land in Palermo, Italy, on Wednesday, August 5, 2020.

The phenomenon occurred around 17:00 UTC (19:00 LT) in Cefalu. Panic ensued among passersby as the waterspout came ashore.

Videos captured by citizens showed the tornado blowing trees and picking up debris across its path.

No injuries or major damages were reported.

"Some objects were blown away and some trees were uprooted, but nothing more serious happened," said an Italian media.

The whirlwind shortly lost its strength as it moved further inland.
