A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit east of Kuril Islands, Russia at 22:06 UTC on March 28, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 9 km (5.6 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

The epicenter was located 267 km (166 miles) ESE of Ozernovskiy and 291 km (181 miles) SSE of Vilyuchiunsk, Russia.

There are no people living within 100 km (6.2 miles).

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and unreinforced brick with mud construction.
