A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 struck the Kuril Islands, Russia, at 15:58 UTC on February 15, 2026. The agency is reporting a depth of 55 km (34 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.0 at a depth of 50 km (31 miles).

The epicenter was located 284 km (176 miles) SSW of Severo-Kuril’sk (population 2 400), and 600 km (380 miles) SSW of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (population 181 000), Russia.
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and unreinforced brick with mud construction.
