Tons of mud crashed onto a village located in mountains of Indonesia's main island of Java on Monday, December 31, 2018, killing at least 15 people and leaving more than 20 missing.

The landslide took place early Monday in Sirnaresmi village of West Java's Sukabumi district, burying 30 homes, according to BNPB's Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Pouring rain, electricity cuts, and rough roads are preventing heavy machinery from accessing the area in the Sukabumi regency, Nugroho said Tuesday.

"Relief efforts have also been hampered by a lot of people who want to get to the disaster," he said. "The roads are narrow, which has caused rescue teams, logistics and ambulances to be stuck in traffic jams."

Made Oka Astawa, head of the operations division at the National Search and Rescue Agency, told AP that at least six bodies were found under 4 meters (13 feet) of mud with the help of two excavators that managed to reach the devastated area.

Search operations were halted late Tuesday due to heavy rain and darkness and are expected to continue early Wednesday, January 2.
