Multiple daily heat records were broken in parts of south-central Texas on Thursday, May 15, under the influence of an early-season heat wave.

Camp Mabry recorded a daily high of 37.2°C (99°F), breaking the 100-year-old record of 36.6°C (98°F) for May 15, set in 1925. Meanwhile, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport reached 37.2 °C (99 °F), surpassing its previous record of 35.5°C (96°F) set in 2003.

The heatwave is forecast to persist through the weekend and into next week. Temperatures along the Texas Gulf Coast are expected to reach around 35°C (mid-90s°F), while inland areas may see highs of up to 43°C (upper 100s°F).

Multiple daily heat records are expected to be broken in parts of south-central Texas during this period, with some areas potentially seeing the highest May temperatures on record.

Major to Extreme Heat Risk is expected to affect parts of the state until at least the middle of next week, with the heat potentially persisting through the following weekend, especially across parts of central and western Texas.

The ongoing heatwave is producing conditions that can affect anyone without effective cooling or sufficient hydration. Authorities are urging residents to follow standard heat safety protocols during this first major heatwave of the season.

Above-average temperatures, with highs reaching the upper 30s°C (upper 80s to 90s°F), are also forecast today from the Midwest to the East Coast. However, this period of elevated heat is expected to be brief, with a cold front forecast to return temperatures closer to seasonal averages by the weekend.
