Flash floods cause infrastructural damage and road closures in Johannesburg, South Africa
Heavy rains triggered flash floods across Johannesburg on March 5, 2025, leading to infrastructure damage and road closures.
The flooding resulted in collapsed roads, clogged drains, and submerged bridges, prompting emergency teams to work around the clock.
Structural damage was reported in residential areas, with a wall collapse occurring at Honey Bee Villas in Honeydew and another on Dale Lace Avenue in Randpark Ridge. No injuries were reported.
Rescue operations were conducted after two motorists became stranded while attempting to cross flooded roads. One individual was rescued at Platina Bridge in Jukskei Park, while another was assisted in Weltevreden Park.
Emergency Management Services (EMS) reported major disruptions in Weltevreden Park, Strubens Valley, Newlands, Parkhurst, and Randpark Ridge.
Several bridges, including Mangaan Bridge, Platina Bridge, and Witkoppen Bridge, were closed because of rising water levels. The Klein Jukskei River burst its banks, further exacerbating the situation.
Residents are urged to avoid low-lying areas, flooded bridges, and riverbanks. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, maintain safe distances, and refrain from attempting to cross floodwaters. Emergency teams remain on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of Johannesburg for further developments.
