Strengthening clipper storm to bring snow and strong winds to Great Lakes region
A powerful storm system is set to intensify by Wednesday, December 4, 2024, bringing strong winds to the northern Plains and Midwest before spreading across the Great Lakes and Northeast by the end of the week.

A strengthening clipper storm will track north of the Great Lakes midweek with widespread snow and gusty to strong winds through the region and into the Northeast U.S. followed by the potential for more lake effect snow.
Lake-effect snow will continue to downwind from Lakes Erie and Ontario on Tuesday. On Wednesday, moderate to heavy lake-enhanced snow develop downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario.
By Wednesday night, wind gusts exceeding 64 km/h (40 mph) are expected in the north-central U.S. and the Great Lakes region, before moving toward the Central Appalachians and the Northeast on Thursday, December 5.
NWS forecaster Ziegenfelder said the storm will produce heavy snow over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan through Thursday.
Light snow is forecast over parts of the Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley Tuesday through Thursday.
As the front moves over the Ohio Valley into the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, light to moderate snow will develop over parts of the Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians on Wednesday into Thursday.
Additionally, moderate to heavy snow will develop over parts of Northern New England on Wednesday. Light to moderate snow will develop over other parts of Southern New England and the Northeast. Rain will also develop over the coastal parts of New England.
