A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit off the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia at 04:24 UTC on August 30, 2024. The agency is reporting a depth of 27 km (16.7 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.
The epicenter was located 116.8 km (72.6 miles) E of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (population 181 216) and 131.5 km (81.7 miles) E of Vilyuchinsk (population 24 204), Kamchatka, Russia.
This is an aftershock of the M7.0 earthquake at 19:10 UTC on August 17, 2024.
246 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking and 25 000 weak.
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
