‘Long-duration’ M5.5 earthquake shakes Peloponnese, Greece

A shallow earthquake registered by the EMSC as Mw5.5 earthquake hit near the coast of southwestern Peloponnese, a peninsula in southern Greece, at 05:14 UTC (08:14 local time) on June 25, 2018. The quake hit at a depth of 10 km (5 miles). The USGS reports M5.5 at a depth of 30.4 km (19 miles). The Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens reports M5.2 at a depth of 7 km (4.3 miles).
The epicenter was located 27 km (16.8 miles) W of Methóni (population), 69.2 km (43 miles) WSW of Kalamata (population 54 100) and 96.9 km (60.2 miles) WSE of Spárti (population 16 239), Greece.
There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries, officials said.
"The earthquake had a long duration and initially we were worried," the Mayor of the town of Pylos told the Greek Reporter. Pylos is located 31 km (20 miles) northeast of the epicenter.
Locals report several earthquakes minutes apart.
The head of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, Efthymios Lekkas, said that it was likely this was the main quake with aftershocks not expected to be stronger.
According to EMSC, two aftershocks measuring M2.9 and M3.0 hit the same area at 06:07 and 07:02 UTC, respectively.
