Severe weather claims 12 lives, affects thousands in Colombia
At least 12 people have been killed and 1 341 families affected by severe weather since the start of the current rainy season in Colombia (April – May), the country's National Disaster Risk Management Agency (UNRGD) reports.
Since the start of the season, the country experienced 103 severe weather events, including thunderstorms, heavy rain, floods and flash floods, landslides and hail, UNGRD said.
The worst affected departments are Cundinamarca, Tolima, Antioquia, Boyacá, Santander, Norte de Santander, Nariño and Valle del Cauca.
Severe weather left 12 people dead in Antioquia, Santander, Cundinamarca, Caldas, Tolima, Huila, Cauca and Nariño.
In addition to 1 341 families affected, 11 homes were destroyed and 1 097 damaged.
While the country is now less vulnerable to severe weather events, thanks to the construction of 5 400 mitigation works and installation of over 100 warning systems, UNGRD director Carlos Iván Márquez Pérez warned residents that more severe weather is expected across the country with a longer than normal rainy season expected.
