Strong M6.0 earthquake hits southern Alaska
A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 struck southern Alaska at 17:11 UTC on November 27, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 69.4 km (43.1 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.0 at a depth of 83 km (51.5 miles). According to the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC), a tsunami is not expected.

The epicenter was located 13 km (8 miles) WNW of Susitna (population 18), 60 km (37 miles) NW of Anchorage (population 291 247), 61 km (38 miles) W of Knik-Fairview (population 14 923), 68 km (43 miles) WNW of Eagle River (population 24 793), and 844 km (524 miles) W of Whitehorse, Canada (population 28 201).
211 000 people are estimated to have felt moderate shaking, 213 000 light, and 43 000 weak.
According to the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC), a tsunami is not expected from this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides and liquefaction that might have contributed to losses.
Liquefaction triggered by this earthquake is considered unlikely. No significant landsliding is expected.
