A strong aftershock registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit near the coast of Kamchatka, Russia at 03:49 UTC on August 27, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 53.4 km (33.1 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 98 km (61 miles) E of Severo-Kuril’sk (population 2 422) and 242 km (150 miles) SSW of Vilyuchinsk (population 25 204), Kamchatka, Russia.
5 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking and 1 000 weak.
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and unreinforced brick with mud construction.

This region was the epicenter of a powerful, tsunami-producing M8.8 earthquake at 23:24 UTC on July 29, 2025, followed by over 1 300 moderate to strong aftershocks, including 14 with magnitudes M6+.
Preliminary data from KBGSRAS shows that the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula shifted southeastward by nearly 2 m (6.6 feet) after the M8.8 earthquake. This is comparable in scale to displacement observed during the 2011 M9.1 Tōhoku earthquake in Japan.
