At least 2 people were reported dead in Indiana on Monday, March 31, after storms battered the central U.S. through the weekend.
One man died in Valparaiso, Indiana, after his tractor-trailer tipped due to severe cross winds on Sunday afternoon. The second fatality was reported in Millersburg when thunderstorm winds blew over an Amish buggy at the intersection of SR-13 and CR 43.
The storms stretched from Lower Michigan down to eastern Texas and northern Louisiana, unleashing damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. Tornadoes were spotted in several states, and the National Weather Service (NWS) received dozens of wind and hail reports on Sunday, March 30.
Wind gusts of up to 154 km/h (96 mph) were reported in Jackson, Michigan, 137 km/h (85 mph) near Hoopeston, Illinois, and 130 km/h (81 mph) in Cascade Township, Michigan, and Valparaiso, Indiana.
In addition, large hail was reported across Arkansas.
More than 70 Tornado Warnings were issued, and nearly 400 storm-related incidents were reported on Sunday. This was the second-most active day for severe weather this year, behind March 14, when there were over 600 reports.
The storm system is currently over the Ohio, Tennessee, and Lower Mississippi Valleys and will move eastward through the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and central Gulf Coast on Monday. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued an Enhanced Risk (level 3/5) of severe weather across the region on Monday.
Large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes are forecast across the region. The Gulf Coast will receive heavy rains, which could cause flash floods in the region. Isolated flash flooding is also possible across the southeast/southern Appalachians and parts of the northern Mid-Atlantic. Showers and a few thunderstorms are also forecast ahead of the front across New England.
The storms are forecast to clear the East Coast late Monday or early on Tuesday as the cold front moves into the Atlantic, with the chance a few flurries may mix in behind the front across the interior Northeast. Thunderstorms will continue to threaten Florida into Tuesday.
