Very bright fireball reported over New York, U.S.

A bright fireball streaked through the night sky over New York, U.S. at 01:08 UTC on April 14, 2024 (21:08 LT, April 13). The event lasted between 3 and 7 seconds.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) received 139 reports from the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

An analysis of these reports indicates that the fireball first became visible about 80 km (50 miles) above the New York City suburb of Mamaroneck, traveling in a northeast direction at 51 155 km/h (38 000 mph) for some 60 km (37 miles) before it disintegrated at an altitude of 48 km (30 miles) above Norven Green State Forest.

The meteor was not associated with any currently active meteor shower, according to NASA Meteor Watch.

The event comes just 4 days after a similar fireball event over New Jersey, U.S. at 07:44 UTC (03:44 LT) on April 10.
