Strong M6.3 aftershock hits Kermadec Islands Region, New Zealand

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.3 hit Kermadec Islands Region at 05:17 UTC on June 16, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 35 km (21.7 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.4 at a depth of 30 km (18 miles).
The epicenter was located about 872 km (542 miles) NE of Ngunguru and 892 km (555 miles) NE of Whangarei, New Zealand.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, PTWC said.
The quake comes just over 6 hours after M7.2 hit the same area (at 22:52 UTC, June 15) and M6.1 in Tonga, about 1 140 km (700 miles) to the north.
The USGS registered 6 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 4.6 to 6.3.
