Firefighter dies while battling wildfire in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia
A 40-year-old firefighter lost his life after a sudden medical emergency while battling a wildfire in Moschelle in Annapolis County on May 21, 2026.

A volunteer firefighter, member of the Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department, died while responding to a wildfire near Moschelle in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, on May 21.
The firefighter suffered a medical emergency during wildfire suppression operations west of Bridgetown. Crews on scene initiated resuscitation efforts, but the firefighter later died. Authorities had not publicly released a cause of death at the time of reporting.
“It is with profound sorrow and broken hearts that the Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department announces the line of duty death of our brother, Firefighter Alexandru Uichita, age 40, who passed away on the evening of Thursday, May 21, during wildfire suppression operations in Moschelle, Annapolis County,” said the Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department.
“This tragic loss is a reminder of the extraordinary courage and selflessness firefighters demonstrate every day. Whether career or volunteer, these people put themselves in harm’s way to protect their neighbors and communities. Their dedication and bravery never go unnoticed, and this tragedy is felt far beyond the fire line,” said Kim Masland, the minister of natural resources.
“Those wishing to offer financial support to the family are asked to please note that all donations will be managed and collected by the Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department through the department treasurer and leadership. No donations will be accepted through any crowdfunding or online donation platforms,” they said
The Moschelle fire burned approximately 1.19 ha (3 acres) before being brought under control on the evening of May 21.
