Preliminary observations indicate that recent rainfall and saturated cut slopes along the highway may have triggered the failure, though an official geotechnical assessment from the Geological Survey of India or the state disaster management authorities is still pending.
The Udhampur–Srinagar corridor remains highly susceptible to slope failures due to steep terrain and construction activities within the outer Himalayan range.
Traffic along the affected stretch of the highway was temporarily suspended while clearing and stabilization work was underway. Preliminary estimates suggest property losses worth crores of Indian rupees.
Landslides are a recurring hazard in Udhampur district, particularly during the monsoon season when intense rainfall and surface runoff destabilize weathered shale and sandstone formations.
Authorities have advised travelers to avoid the area until stabilization work is completed.
