A large-scale fire broke out at 08:30 LT on July 24, in the Chillancito neighborhood of Concepción, Biobío Region, Chile.
The fire originated in a commercial warehouse used for storing imported secondhand clothing, located at the intersection of Camilo Henrquez and Santa Sofa streets. It spread quickly to adjacent homes due to strong winds and the high flammability of the stored materials.
At least 10 residential structures were damaged or destroyed. Approximately 50 individuals were displaced, and a temporary shelter was set up at Liceo Balmaceda. Two daycares were evacuated as a precautionary measure due to thick black smoke that spread across several blocks of the city.
More than 300 firefighters from five neighboring municipalities, including Concepción, Talcahuano, Penco, Hualpén, and San Pedro de la Paz, responded to the emergency.
The firefighting effort lasted over 12 hours. As of late evening, the fire was reported as contained but not fully extinguished.
Among the injured were at least three people, including a married couple with respiratory burns who were hospitalized. Authorities urged residents in nearby areas to avoid exposure to smoke and use masks due to toxic emissions from burning synthetic materials.
Winds reaching up to 60 km/h (37 mph) accelerated the fire’s propagation and forced preventive evacuations of multiple homes.
The warehouse, reportedly operated by the company “Rags United,” stored thousands of tightly packed bales of used clothing, which significantly increased the heat release rate and smoke density during combustion.
Officials have launched an investigation to determine the origin and causes of the fire. Preliminary information suggests possible ignition from an electrical fault, though this remains unconfirmed.
