A large landslide claimed the lives of 16 people along the Tsiribihina River in western Madagascar on Tuesday, November 12.

According to the Maritime Agency Services of Madagascar, a boat carrying 26 passengers had docked at the port around midnight local time when the sudden landslide struck the area.

The boat had been en route between the towns of Belo sure Tsiribihina and Ankalalaobe, both located in the Menabe region of western Madagascar. Rescue efforts succeeded in saving 10 passengers who were unharmed despite the severe impact of the landslide, as confirmed in the agency’s official statement on November 13.

Madagascar’s riverine transportation infrastructure, vital to connecting remote communities, faces significant challenges due to environmental hazards like landslides.

Authorities acknowledged the pressing concern for enhancing safety protocols and infrastructure improvements to protect passengers in disaster-prone areas. An investigation is expected to determine the cause of the landslide, focusing on implementing preventive measures to avert future tragedies.

Landslides are a recurring issue in Madagascar and other regions of Africa with mountainous or unstable terrain. Heavy rains, deforestation, and poor land management practices often contribute to landslides.
