Landslide kills at least 13, leaves 30 missing in Burutsi village, North Kivu, DR Congo
A landslide killed at least 13 people and left 30 more missing in the Burutsi village, Kashebere area of Walikale Territory, DR Congo, on January 13, 2026.
At least 13 people were reported dead after a landslide struck the Burtusi Village in North Kivu at around 01:00 local time (LT) on January 13.
Heavy rainfall had been affecting the region since around 18:00 LT on January 12, leading to the landslide later at night. The search and rescue operations were being conducted by the AFC/M23 rebel groups controlling the area.
Initial tolls had confirmed 9 fatalities; however, later searches put the toll at 13, including at least 5 children. Four people were reportedly injured, while around 30 remain missing.
A section of the Goma-Masisi-Walikale road was also buried by the landslide, covering an area of approximately 1 ha (3 acres). At least ten homes were also buried by the landslide as it swept through the village.
