Bright meteor illuminates sky across Great Lakes region
A bright meteor was observed streaking across the night sky in the Great Lakes area at 03:36 UTC on May 4, 2024 (23:36 EDT, May 3).
The American Meteor Society (AMS) received 57 reports of the event from numerous witnesses across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, despite prevalent cloud cover.
The meteor, which was not associated with the ongoing Eta Aquariid meteor shower, was initially spotted at an altitude of approximately 93 km (58 miles) above Marysville, Ohio.
It traveled northwest for ~82 km (51 miles) at a speed of about 119 091 km/h (74 000 mph) before disintegrating 66 km (41 miles) above Lima, Ohio.
